These “requirements” being thrown at you are not required by the Catholic Church, but rather are being required by the priest(s) at the parish. To get married in the Catholic Church, one member of the couple—preferably both— needs to be baptized. WebI see atheists get married in places that offer very little in the way of marriage recognition, and I wonder what that governmental validation offers to an atheist. But yes, you're right in that it's a largely rhetorical question exposing my failure to comprehend what place marriage has in a reasonable society.
